Flower Arranging

Since October 2023, Jennifer has been sharing her time and talents by volunteering once a week with the florist Penelope Fleur.

Under the guidance of the wonderful manager, Kayleigh, Jennifer has been learning new skills, like crafting beautiful Christmas wreaths.

She’s also created stunning arrangements, including a gorgeous display for the Teens+ Liberton Brae centre, a beautiful bouquet for her grandma’s birthday, and a vibrant sunflower bouquet. She’s excited to continue creating different styles of bouquets for others to enjoy.

Well done Jennifer, your arrangements are truly beautiful!

Botanics Trip

Thanks to the community team at the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens!

Our students received donated tickets to immerse themselves in the enchanting light trail.

The students were captivated by the mesmerizing display of lights and the magical atmosphere created throughout the gardens.

As they strolled along the illuminated pathways, they were greeted by a kaleidoscope of colours and intricate light installations. The trail showcased a variety of themes, from dazzling light tunnels to sparkling fairy light displays.

What a fantastic trip!

Cooking Club

Teens+ students learning to cook

Eight students attended our Mexican-themed Cooking Club, making fajitas and chilli with homemade guac and salsa!

While there was support available, chopping and cooking was ALL done by students! The session was not 1-1 because NEXT STEPS is all about discovering what independence can look like. Doing so allowed students to spend more time with their peers independently.

After the cooking was done, everyone sat down together for a lovely meal, using good table manners and social skills to share the food. When they were full, they all tidied up as a team. Great job everyone!

John and Katrina

Teens+ students John and Katrina are football superfans

Being such big fans, they were keen to give back to their teams.

Now, through Next Steps, they volunteer once a week during community lunch at Hib’s and Heart’s stadiums.

They help clear up plates/dishes, serve teas and coffees, welcome guests, assist in the local pantry, and socialise with everyone attending.

Next Steps has allowed John and Katrina to build confidence and skills while connecting with their community in new ways.

Well done, John and Katrina, keep up the good work!

Andrew

Andrew loves a cuppa, a cake and a chat at the local Gilmerton cafe.

He would visit with his staff and friends to practise life skills and develop his communication and social skills.

Andrew was doing so well that he wanted to give back to his supportive community. He now volunteers 2 hours a week and is thriving.

He helps stock up the storerooms, serves customers, and helps the staff with daily tasks.

Andrew hopes to take on more hours, more responsibility, and eventually, paid employment as his skills develop.

Well done, Andrew!
